The construction industry has a poor health and safety record. Serious injury and death happen regularly as a result of construction work. This affects not only workers, but also members of the public. Good management of the construction process is essential to help prevent accidents and ill health in the industry.

The revised Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) Regulations 2007 place new duties on clients, CDM Co-ordinators, designers and contractors to plan, co-ordinate and manage health and safety throughout all stages of a construction project.

McAuley Safety Management provide the role of CDM Co-ordinators (CDM-C) to assist their Client with compliance under the regulations. We have been engaged on numerous projects ranging in value from £50k to £25M undertaken in Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

The regulations in the Republic of Ireland are different to that in NI and GB. However, we have also been engaged as Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) on various projects throughout Ireland. Projects we have acted as PSDP range from €150k to €36M.

In our roles as CDM Co-ordinator / PSDP we ensure that:-

  • Designers comply with their duties - in particular, in respect to the avoidance and reduction of risk and adhere to the general principles of prevention.
  • Designers co-operate with each other for the purposes of health and safety.
  • Pre-Construction Health and Safety Information / Preliminary Safety & Health Plans are prepared before arrangements are made for a principal contractor / PSCS to be appointed.
  • We give advice, if requested, to the client on the competence and allocation of resources by designers and all contractors; advise contractors appointing designers; and also advise the client on the Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan before the construction phase starts
  • The project is notified to HSENI / HSE / HSA.
  • The Safety File is prepared and delivered to the client at the end of a project.

Our larger clients, e.g. Dunnes Stores, Henderson Group, Almac Group, prefer information, particularly the Health and Safety File, in electronic format. To satisfy their demands we have developed a fully interactive solution tailored to their individual needs.

The advantage we have over many of our competitors is that we are not an in-house division of a design discipline. Our clients benefit in that we integrate seamlessly into the project design team, but provide a completely independent service.
